MS02 - New Challenges in Derivative-free Optimization Methods for Engineering Optimization

Organizers:
A. L. Custódio (CMA/FCT-UNL, Portugal), J.F. Aguilar Madeira (IDMEC-IST and ISEL, Portugal)

Optimization in engineering is often associated with additional challenges resulting from expensive function evaluation, non-smoothness, or the presence of noise. In the impossibility of computing analytical expressions for derivatives or obtaining good quality numerical approximations to them, Derivative-free Optimization methods are the alternative to tackle this class of problems. In the last decades several Derivative-free Optimization algorithms have been proposed and/or analyzed. Nevertheless, subjects like Global Optimization, Multiobjective Optimization, Surrogate-based Optimization or Large-scale Optimization are still open in this scientific domain. The purpose of this mini-symposium is to bring together researchers and practitioners which develop and/or apply Derivative-free Optimization techniques in engineering optimization. We welcome new theoretical developments in Derivative-free Optimization methods as well as applications in engineering problems.
